Gregory Smithsimon is assistant professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, the City University of New York. His works include September 12: Community and Neighborhood Recovery at Ground Zero (2011) and The Beach Beneath the Streets: Exclusion, Control, and Play in Public Space (with Benjamin Shepard, 2011). His research focuses on how the design of urban spaces affects social relations and fosters inclusion or exclusion, segregation or integration, and social life or social isolation.
