Stephen A. Goldsmith is an urban planner, artist and scholar, whose wide-ranging projects find their grounding in the wisdom of Jane Jacobs.

Stephen founded and directed ArtSpace, a non-profit developer of mixed-use live/work spaces in Salt Lake City, for nearly two decades. As a Harvard Loeb Fellow, he promoted collaborative design, ecological building, affordable housing, and walkable neighborhoods.

In 2000, as Salt Lake City Planning Director under Mayor Rocky Anderson, Stephen crafted progressive projects and policies for mixed-use neighborhoods, public transit zoning, and a "FitCities" urban sustainability and ethics program, launched in conjunction with the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Stephen also helped mentor the next generation of socially responsible planners and architects, as Director of the Frederick P. Rose Architectural Fellowship for four years. Currently, Stephen is Associate Professor in City and Metropolitan Planning at the University of Utah. He also serves as Director of The Center for the Living City.
